What Is A Godly Woman and Wife: Biblical Womanhood
What does it really mean to be a godly woman? Discover what Scripture teaches about biblical womanhood, marriage, singleness, and living for the glory of God.
What Is Biblical Womanhood?
What does it really mean to be a godly woman?
Depending on where you search, you’ll receive a variety of answers. Some point to Proverbs 31. Others emphasize Titus 2. Maybe others focus on personality, appearance, or traditional roles.
These conversations can be helpful, but they often leave me asking a deeper question:
What does the Bible actually say about biblical womanhood, and how do I live it out?
This question came especially as I approached marriage. As I stepped into the role of a wife, I found myself asking the Lord:
What does faithfulness look like now?
Thankfully, everything we need is in His word (2 Peter 1:3).
Before We Begin…
Before discussing what a godly woman does, we first need to understand what makes someone right with God. It is not a matter of doing more “good” than “bad” or working our way anywhere.
This is where many conversations about biblical topics go wrong.
Godliness is never the means of earning God’s love—it is the fruit of already belonging to Him.
We can’t live a “godly life” without first being submitted to the One who makes it possible. It’s about union with Christ.
What Does Godliness Mean?
Godliness is a way of conduct that shows our reverence, respect, and love for God.
The Greek word eusebeia means:
“piety; specially, the gospel scheme:—godliness, holiness” (Strong’s Concordance)
In other words, godliness is not just outward behavior.
It reflects a heart yielded to Christ.

Godliness vs. Righteousness
Scripture teaches that righteousness is not something we earn.
It is given to us through faith in Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Because Christ lived the perfect life we never could and died in our place, those who repent and believe are counted righteous before God.
“And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—” (Philippians 3:9)
This changes everything.
We don’t pursue holiness to become loved.
We pursue holiness because we are loved.
While we still have a responsibility to “practice” (1 John 3:7) and to “pursue” righteousness (2 Timothy 2:22), this does not earn us our salvation or get us to heaven in any way.
Jesus alone does this.
Alistair Begg, a pastor from Scotland, has something powerful to say about this. Check it this 3-minute video here.
The Search for Clarity
When approaching the idea of marriage, I had dozens of questions. They continue to this day.
What does He expect of a wife?
How can I faithfully fulfill this role God had entrusted to me?
Throughout school and work there were always clear expectations.
Surely God had spoken clearly about this role too.
As I searched the Word, I discovered that He had.
What Is True of Every Christian Woman?
Before discussing wives specifically, Scripture first describes what is true of every woman who follows Christ whether or not she is a wife. A wife is an honorable role, but we must remember that it is merely a role and not our identity. Our identity is in Christ as children of God (Galatians 3:26–29!!!).
A godly woman…
- Fears the Lord
- Loves Christ above everything else
- Desires His glory
- Walks in repentance
- Submits to God’s Word
Praise God for His Word.
It is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

A Godly Wife: A Calling
Marriage doesn’t replace our calling to love Christ. Instead, it gives us a new context in which to faithfully live out that calling.
One passage that challenged me was 1 Corinthians 7:34:
“And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband.”
When I first read this passage, I wrestled with what Paul meant. I mistakenly assumed that marriage was a distraction from the Lord. With more study and wise counsel (thank you, friends), however, I realized that was not the truth.
Marriage is not a distraction from Christ—it is one of the ways many women glorify Him. Marriage introduces new responsibilities that require our time, attention, and faithful stewardship. Pleasing one’s husband, loving one’s family, and caring for the home are not lesser pursuits but ways a wife honors the Lord.
This shift doesn’t happen overnight. By God’s grace and patience, He gradually teaches us to embrace these new responsibilities. I certainly expected the transition to happen much faster than it has, but the Lord has been faithful to teach me one step at a time. The learning never ends.
Titus 2: A Picture of Biblical Womanhood
One of the clearest passages describing the role of a godly wife is Titus 2:3–5.

When one marries, work and priorities begin to change, as the home and husband become the primary work to which they are called and the ministry the Lord has them invest most of their energy into.
This doesn’t mean wives cannot pursue education, employment, ministry, or other good endeavors. Rather, Scripture teaches that these pursuits should never compete with the covenant responsibilities God has entrusted to marriage and the home.
God’s high calling is for them to now be the helper for their husband (Genesis 2:18), as they were created by God for this very purpose, among other things (1 Corinthians 11:9).
As wives, we should joyfully support and labor alongside our husbands in the work God has entrusted to them.
We are both submitted to Christ, and one way for a woman to do this is to submit to her husband (Ephesians 5:22). It’s something to learn, but it’s a joyful thing.
This was a whole new way of thinking for me and something I continue to ask questions about, especially when it comes to what it looks like practically.
Having someone in your life who has walked this path before (i.e., an older woman) is a huge blessing when walking into a new role as a wife and mother.
God’s Grace
While we cannot do all things perfectly, we can call upon the Author and Perfecter of our faith to guide, lead, and teach us in the ways that they should choose.
Saying “yes” to the Lord is saying “yes” to His design.
Again, not all are called to marry.
But to those who are, our “yes” to marriage is saying “yes” to loving, serving, honoring, and ministering to our husbands as a top priority in life.
A New Job
This change in role demands a change in responsibilities, time, and efforts; our priorities begin to change. Your husband requires your best. Loving and serving one’s husband is not a part-time commitment—it is a God-given calling that deserves intentional time, prayer, sacrifice, and joy.
It not only blesses the marriage but it blesses any children God blesses you with since it creates a sense of security in their children, knowing their parents love the Lord and one another. It also demonstrates for them (and the world) the love of Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:32).
The Best Yes
My “yes” to the Lord nearly always leads to a deep refining. Marriage has done this time and time again.
My sin has never been so apparent.
It’s easy to not see your sin when you are on your own, but doing life-on-life with another human brings so many things to the surface.
It is hard, but it is good.
I’ve heard it said that marriage isn’t supposed to make you happy but instead holy. I’ve experienced both so far.
While I’m still new to this, I can say the Lord has given me such joy in marriage and a level of sanctification I’ve never experienced before.

Learning to Be a Wife
Walking with the Lord is the most humbling experience.
I’ve learned that He often reveals my selfishness in ordinary moments.
Whether it’s choosing patience over frustration, considering a new way of doing things, serving when I’m tired, or asking forgiveness when I’ve sinned, marriage reminds me how much I need God’s grace.
While it has exposed my weaknesses, it has also magnified His faithfulness.
A Godly Husband Matters
As the head (Ephesians 5:23), husbands have the responsibility of leading their wives and casting godly vision.
Wives get to rest under His leadership, being careful to devote much love, attention, and prayer to her own walk with the Lord.
Both partners should strive to abide in Christ, demonstrate His love to one another, and continue to grow in Him as disciples. Without this abiding in Him, we can’t do anything (John 15:5).
Our relationship with the Lord should be our first and greatest priority.
As I learned more about a man’s role, it helped me to determine what to look for in a husband. It also helps me to ensure that I am not holding my husband to an expectation I make up on my own, but on the word of God. It shapes prayers, conversations, and blesses the marriage richly.

Godliness for Single Women
Many women feel that to live out their calling as a woman of God they must marry and bear children. While these are high and beautiful callings from the Lord, He does not promise these things to all women.
We can rest assured that what God has given us is what we need. What He has withheld is not ours to hold onto. He is a Father we can trust. He can give us work to do, people to love, and a gospel to share. We must give ourselves fully to whatever is before us, knowing it is God who has given it for us to do. The real living is not on the other side or in another role. The real living is now.
“Single life may only be a stage of a life’s journey, but even a stage is a gift. God may replace it with another gift, but the receiver accepts it with thanksgiving… The life of faith is lived one day at a time, and has to be lived—not always looked forward to as though the “real” living were around the next corner. It is for today which we are responsible. God still owns tomorrow” (Let Me Be a Woman)

Final Encouragement
Praise God for His great design, tender love and care, and loads of mercy as we walk out our callings as Christians. He knows we are not perfect (1 John 1:8), but He desires our hearts to be repentant and obedient (Psalm 51:17; 1 John 5:3).
Thank you for taking the time to read this post. As always, my encouragement is to search the Scriptures for yourself. Don’t take my word as truth—take God’s.
We won’t live this perfectly. Every one of us needs God’s grace every single day. Yet what a comfort it is to know that the One who calls us is also faithful to sanctify us.
Whether you are single, engaged, newly married, or have walked with the Lord for decades, may your greatest desire be to know Christ more deeply and glorify Him in whatever season He has entrusted to you.
So keep seeking Him. Keep searching the Scriptures. Keep trusting His design.
He is worthy.
